COASTLINE PILATES
CLIENTS OF THE MONTH

Irena Polic
To a newcomer of Coastline Pilates she says, “Welcome to this amazing community!”
Irena hasn’t been a long term client, however she is a very consistent client and is coming up on her one year anniversary with us! She started with Pilates in February 2019, and has only ever attended our studio. She fell in love with reformer classes and you will see her often in Abigail’s Friday Reformer at 9am. She is a Santa Cruz mom and finds great joy in spending time with her kiddos in the natural beauty Santa Cruz has to offer. Her favorite snack is pretzels and milk. “Yes, I know, some find that very odd, but the salt of the pretzel and the smooth texture of the milk are a winning combination. Try it sometime.” She would love to travel to any city in the world because she enjoys learning about the city’s history, the arts, the people, and the culture. Irena has a strong heart for the people, along with the community that surrounds her. We are very thankful for Irena and the joy she adds to our studio! Lastly, Irena is an advice giver, it was hard for her to pick just one, however to a newcomer of Coastline Pilates…she says, “Welcome to this amazing community!”

Paul Skenazy & Farnaz Fatemi
Advice for a new client coming into Coastline Pilates.
Farnaz: I’m excited for you—there is a teacher and a class right up your alley. Give yourself the chance to find it, and don’t worry about what you think you can’t do—the community here is forgiving, and so is your body.
Paul: Don’t be afraid to try out a class; they’re forgiving and you won’t look any sillier than the rest of us.
If you have been coming to Coastline Pilates for any length of time, you have probably run into the wonderful Paul and Farnaz. They are regulars here at the studio, and we cannot be more grateful for their smiles and joy!
Farnaz started on the reformer back in ’09 because she was preparing her body for a large surgery. The prep work in the studio, not only helped her recover faster, but started a routine she never wanted to quit. She started coming specifically to Coastline in 2015, and immediately fell in love with the intimacy created by the small classes and the way the teachers know her and her body specifically. “When I discovered this gem right in my neighborhood, I never looked anywhere else.” Her favorite class is Wednesday Reformer at 12, because the group is consistent, which offers the ability for Teresa to challenge and educate them every time.
Paul had done Pilates before, but started slow again about five months ago with a Body Rolling Workshop with Teresa. He still finds it hard to make himself come in for Reformer classes, but loves the after effect the class has on his body and attitude. “Working with Teresa is also always a lesson in anatomy and right posture as much as it is in strengthening.” Paul particularly likes the reformer classes because it puts him “through his physical paces” and then the Body Rolling class, “unknots my paces created in reformer class.”Additionally, most of us here at Coastline have real bodies with awkward juts of leg, arm, back and ankle, and a bit more flesh than people in commercials.
Santa Cruz has been their home for many years, so the paradise of the north end of Monterey Bay is their favorite. Between the terrain, the fresh produce, the whale watching, the beach and the water, the weather, the range of ages, races, personal styles and economic levels, they love all things Santa Cruz.
This couple are true supporters of the community here in the town of Santa Cruz and here at Coastline Pilates.

Rena Cochlin
When asked what she would say to a new client coming to Coastline Pilates…
Rena would say, “Enjoy!”
Our client highlight of the month is Rena Cochlin, who is an avid advocate for MOVING. For 45 years, she was a major influence and faculty member to the UCSC physical education department. She taught everything from Yoga, to modern, to folk dance, to physical movement classes, and Pilates. Many of her beginning modern students commented in saying they loved her funny and light-hearted way of teaching, but also greatly appreciated her implementing Pilates theories with the ballet movements in order to find the right muscles. She is going on a year and a half of attending Coastline, but isn’t that new to Pilates mat, going on ten years. Her favorite classes here are the Reformer classes because of their longer lasting effects she feels they have on her body. She has loved her many trips to Greece over the years, but also loves the physical beauty of our own city of Santa Cruz. Her past students mentioned her attention to detail and her investment into her student’s success. They were extremely grateful for all they learned and the improvement they saw through their efforts.
**We are grateful to have Rena practice here at Coastline, and to see an educator with her knowledge continuing to move and still learn with us as well.

“Coastline is a wonderful place to heal and re-pattern old, limiting physical imprints and to grow stronger in your whole self.”
“This month marks my two year anniversary at Coastline Pilates! Prior to this, I had not studied any Pilates, but I had studied yoga for about twelve years. I love my privates with Teresa. Teresa is an instructor here at Coastline, and she is deeply attuned to not only the body, but the subtle aspects of the interplay of the physical body with the psyche. I was able to heal some challenging, layered physical impairments with her guidance and support. I am now stronger both physically and energetically, and Teresa keeps raising the bar and coaching me to grow even stronger. My perfect go-to snack is macadamia nuts, which are high in good fats, salty, and they remind me of home. I was born and raised in Hawaii with a huge macadamia nut tree in my back yard, so whenever I eat them they remind me of home. Santa Cruz has a growing network of bike paths, the ocean, and my community, which give me the opportunity to go for a jog in nature while soaking in the surrounding beauty. Those jogs, along with Pilates, a cup of tea, and reading something inspiring cheers me up and gives me a greater sense of connection to myself and others around me. I say be who you are. We are all meant to be our true selves. And when we drop into that space, then true healing and transformation are possible. “

"I am 55, and my body has never felt better."
"This month is my 5 year anniversary with Coastline Pilates. I started slow, first with Yamuna body rolling and then a pilates mat class. Now I take reformer classes with Abigail and pilates circuit with Ayelet. I love to come here, and I never leave without a smile on my face. The best part is definitely the community of people that come to this specific studio.
"Yamuna ball rolling has changed my body more than any yoga, chiropractic, or anything that I previously did to help with back and joint pain. Nowadays, I am almost pain free and when something comes up, now I have the skills to work on it myself. Thank you Teresa for educating my body!"
"Going to Hale Kai in Hawaii with Teresa and my husband was a dream vacation. I have been twice, and I hope to go back again. Meeting the other instructors, ball rolling with Teresa, and taking in the beautiful paradise home we stayed in was an experience I will never forget."
"My advice to new clients is to take both the Yamuna body rolling and the pilates classes because they work together for your body."
"I am 55, and my body feels better than ever. There is so much that I love about living in Santa Cruz, being near the ocean, the weather, the wonderful people, and of course Coastline Pilates."

"Follow your heart and the universe will always support you."
I've been coming for about 3 months now, but it was the very first studio I tried after moving to Santa Cruz, and I just can't imagine it gets much better. Everyone is so kind from the teachers to the other students that I just crave the hour or two of community I get every week! I'm a sucker for holiday cheer and holiday pastries, so I have been an avid baker since I was 15; hence the need for Pilates! Spending time with my best friends who feel like siblings, going to the beach on a whim, cooking a fresh meal, and feeding my family are just a few of the things that make me happy. The summer in Santa Cruz is my favorite when the sun is always shining bright. I love to encourage more people to follow their dreams and letting them know that anything is possible.
